An Open Letter to Simone Zimmerman

Simone-

Normally, I wouldn't care to write this. I would ignore you like I do the other members of the small, but rabid and vicious, young, self-hating, American Jewish community who pop up here and there to scream and yell and wear keffiyehs and write patronizing and ignorant articles and tweet nonsense that no one notices, but you are different. You have been thrust onto the national stage as a "director of Jewish outreach" for the Bernie Sanders campaign, and for anyone who knows what you stand for, that should read like a The Onion headline. Normally, I try and keep infighting in the Jewish community to a minimum, L-rd knows we see a lot of it. But you are a rotten apple, with the ability to ruin the whole bushel, and you must be called out. You will be known to large swaths of the American population as a "Jewish representative," and that fact makes my stomach turn. What you are saying is not new, not innovative, nor progressive or cool. You are not a great Jew because you call other Jews "yids" or have bagel and schmears on Sundays. You are not open-minded because you went to Berkeley, a bastion of anti-Semitic hatred in the bleak and anti- Semitic UC system. You are somewhat more notable because of the extents to which you have gone to try and destroy Israel, I will give you that. You joined (and led!) blatantly anti-Israel groups, you wrote anti-Israel articles, heck! You even opposed university legislation trying to curb campus anti-Semitism! So when I say you are similar to other self-hating, liberal Americans of Jewish lineage, I don't mean to demean your efforts- you are certainly at the forefront of this vile movement. You must be, or I don't believe Mr. Sanders would have chosen you for your current position.

But this letter is going to focus on the Facebook message that is now making the rounds (I've inserted it below for whomever reads this and is unfamiliar) on the Internet- and I've included the un-censored version you posted first, not the sanitized version you edited once you realized that the original version might come across as, well, insane. Kudos, by the way, for not letting your political aspirations keep you from voicing your truth. Before you changed your truth to suit your political aspirations.

We can start with your beautiful summary of my several-times democratically elected Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Aside from being a war hero, a scholar, a head of state and someone you've never met in your life, you use the most nasty language to discuss the leader of an ally of the United States. The biggest ally in the Middle East, incidentally. It may have missed my attention, but would you please direct me to any similar posts calling out Bashar Assad, who is implementing genocide on the Syrian people? Did you write a similar rant about Khaled Mashaal, Mahmoud Abbas, Hassan Nasrallah, Ahmedenijad, Khameini- you know, leaders who are promising the death and destruction of your fellow Jews, both in Israel and abroad? I would love to see the tweets and Facebook posts you wrote railing against the incitement of Palestinian leadership that has caused innocents to be stabbed and run over and shot with abandon here in Israel these past 5 months. Oh, you haven't? Only Bibi is singled out and told "f--- you"? Nice.

You talk of Bibi's fear mongering. Fair play, coming from some American Jew ensconced in Berkeley or NYC (where I'm from, actually!) Tell me, would you have the gall to say that to my face as I sat in my building's bomb shelter, praying for my life, 4 days after I moved to Israel and made it my home. Would you say Bibi is a fear-monger to the thousands of children from Sderot, Ashkelon and Ashdod who live with PTSD at age 5 because they have lived under the wail of a siren from incoming rockets their whole lives? You know, ever since Israel gave away Gaza in hopes of peace, only to watch their greenhouses turned into rocket launchpads and tunnel-building sites for Hamas? Would you like to go to Sderot and tell those people that Bibi is an ultra-nationalist, blood-lusting, fear-monger who only wants war? I dare you.

Let's move on to him "sanctioning the murder of over 2,000 people" in a "brutal military occupation." I'm going to go out on a limb and say you probably are not a big fan of the IDF. You probably love "Breaking the Silence" and whatever anti-Israel former soldiers who decide to put the love of leftist American Jews, before loyalty to their families and country. I am nothing like you. I love the IDF, the most moral army in the world. Aside from the fact that many past and present members are family and friends of mine, I know who and what they are and I am so proud to have them to defend me. Let me tell you who they are. They are generally 18-21 years old men and women, who have been drafted and asked to give up a chunk of their young lives to protect their family and friends. They are essentially kids who realize that to live in a Jewish homeland, one needs to make sacrifices. Some of them will die. That is a tragedy. I mourn for each life lost like I would my own family member. And I know that if there was no Arab threat to Israel, none of them would ever be killed. They exist because we are under constant threat in Israel and have been since before 1967, before 1948 and before 1929. Either you are entirely ignorant of history, or you are willfully ignoring it. This isn't about Gaza, or 2-states, or even our one state. It's about our existence, in Israel, in America, on this earth. Yours and mine, actually, as we are both (inexplicably) part of the same Jewish people. I'm just not naive enough to think hugs, kisses and capitulation will change reality.

About the Iran deal. How dare you gamble with my country, my people and my life because you think Obama knows better than Bibi about what's best for Israel. Let's say you're right (you're not). Why is Bibi wrong for taking Iran at their word that they want to destroy Israel. It's a matter of public record, in video and print. They want Israel off the map, they will have the tools to do it, an infusion of US cash and they are run by radical mullahs. Why shouldn't Bibi do everything possible to protect his country? Why should you, some know-nothing leftist, sitting safely in hipster Brooklyn think you know anything more that a certifiable genius with mounds of intelligence in front of him? Who ARE You?

I will end with how you signed off. Unfortunately, you are a leftist American Jew who cares more about literally everything than Israel and your people. It is evident from everything I've read about you (considered me obsessed with you, but not in a good way). You speak for a loud, arrogant, willfully ignorant group of disillusioned young Jews who are regrettably growing in ranks. You are so dangerous to American and world Jewry, you can't even imagine. I do hope you see the error of your ways, as you call yourself "a thinking person "although I know you won't. I see you rising in the self- hating ranks in your future career- I'm relatively certain there's a lot of money and prestige in selling out Israel at every turn.

But please know that as loud and vocal as you will be in your life, calling for boycotts, giving anti-Semites ammunition against American Jews and shaming our nation; I will be here on the other side, defending Israel, our people and our right to exist, just as strongly and with the might of right on my side.

Hey girl hey!
Wishing you a complete change of heart,

    4. Thank you for writing such a beautiful and eloquent reply to Simone Zimmerman. BTW, she does not represent the way most Americans feel about Israel. I am an American, I am not Jewish, but I am very pro Israel and the Israeli people. Jordana, we need more voices like yours to be heard so that the world doesn't think that Simone represents the American voice. God bless you.

  3. Very well said, Jordana... and re a change of heart, it can be done. See the following article about Leonard Kristal and Roseanne Barr. He's a retired psychologist, and through Twitter interaction was able to help enlighten Barr to why she was basing her Israel hatred on lies. Now she's one of the most ardent Israel defenders.

Whether the nutcase about whom you write is ill-informed, or is informed, but is willfully acting as a tool for jihad, who knows? But maybe your calling her out to rethink her insanity. One can only hope - I am an optimist. :)

    Well done.

    1. Thank you for reading! I think the difference is, this will lead to a long and lucrative career as a professional Jewish Israel-basher. She will also get accolades and attention from all the right people. I will just be some right-wing crazy Israeli occupier who knows nothing in her mind. But miracles happen every day- so amen to your optimism!

    2. Well, opportunities may open up for you as well, to help wage this war as you are clearly have the courage and clarity to do. In an age in which the largest supposedly pro-Israel organization are either silent on this, or are issuing oatmeal-level blah, pleading with him to walk this all back, people and orgs with backbone, with principle, with clear moral focus are so urgently needed.

I've been working on developing such means, and based on what I read here, I think you'd be interested, and might want to consider. If you'd like to discuss, let's find a way to correspond that is safe on both sides.

  5. Great response to Bernie Sanders' latest appointment of a "director of Jewish outreach". This response could also be directed to the few young Jews in our country of a similar persuasion who find greater acceptance and joy in supporting the savage enemies of their own people.

This young woman is typical of the youth that currently support the dinosaur Sanders who are dumb, deaf and blind with no knowledge or sense of history filled with unsubstantiated self-righteousness who have swallowed the stupid slogan of "a future to believe in" when it was proven to be a dismal ideological failure and collapsed just over twenty years ago.

Simone Zimmerman is an idiot of note and will have a very short fifteen minutes of "fame", which will taint her for the rest of her life and eventually turn her into a bitter unrequited human being. She has chosen her path for life and it will now affect everything she does and wherever she goes for the rest of her life.

  6. amazingly well written and so dead on! Kudos. Only 2 comments that I do not agree with.
One, you state that you are "not naive enough to think hugs, kisses and capitulation will change reality." I would say that this has gone beyond naivete-they have shown over and over that hugs, kisses and capitulation will NOT change reality. They view it as weakness and as help towards their achieving their ultimate goal.
Two, You stated that she is "so dangerous to American and world Jewry..." You limited the danger. The scariest thing with these leftists is they do not accept the danger that they are bringing to the civilized world. It goes well beyond jewry although I too am quite impacted by that. The capitulation to those that see death as their oxygen and seek only destruction of life and all that is good and decent is dangerous to all.
It is amazing to me that these people actually believe that if Israel laid down its weapons the other side would simply live in their colonial house next door with a nice manicured lawn and all would be nirvana. That is the scary part.

  8. We heard today that thanks to Bibi the brilliant economist, Israel is now a leader in children living in poverty. And thanks to Bibi the great war hero, Israel citizens have not felt any sense of security in years. Thanks to Bibi the charismatic diplomat, Israel's relations with the world are weaker than ever. The average citizen can't pay their monthly bills with their salaries, but Bibi The Great easily moves from scandal to scandal.

The only positive thing I have to say after living so many years under his rule is that he is a great politician, in the worst sense of the word. Citizens want everyone to serve in the army? Great idea! Opportunity to gain more power? Let's break up the government! Coalition with the Haredi parties to form a coalition? Haredis don't need to serve in the army! Let's cancel primaries! Let's give natural gas to tycoons instead of providing for citizens! Digging tunnels from Gaza? Stabbings every day for months? Well at least he spent the last few years convincing the world to stop Iran from going nuclear! Oh wait, that failed too.

    1. While I disagree with you vehemently, you have a right to your grievances. As they apply to Simone's issues with Netanyahu, they are completely irrelevant. Also, while I think you're wrong, you actually live here, and therefore have a foundation on which to complain. She doesn't.

      Delete
    2. I have to respond to Avishay. I'm not sure where you get your figures viz a viz children living in poverty. Without actually checking, I would hazard a guess that India, Zimbabwe and a few other countries would put paid to your theory. It just doesn't sit right with me.

It is also not fair that you lay the responsibility for everything at Bibi's feet, sure, he is the prime minister but he is most certainly not omnipotent. He must work within the framework he has - and that is not easy.

This is not America where they basically have two parties, here we have many. Probably because if there are two Jews in a room, there are likely at least three differing opinions! Israel has been defined by coalition politics for as long as I can remember and even longer than that.

Coalition politics tend to tie the hands of those who would rule, taking power away from them, rather than adding it - but surely you can see that for yourself.

I too, am disillusioned with the way things are, but I cannot lay the blame on Bibi, as easy as that may be, because it is not right.

The issues in Israel are many, and this isn't a place for me to rant, so I'll mention one issue that I think is very far reaching in the way it affects the lives of ordinary people.

First and foremost, Israel has NO constitution, which means that the justice system is flawed and the average citizen has no recourse, things tend to turn in on themselves.

How else would there be a situation where a Jewish judge says that there is no basis for religious Jews to have beards in the army. Such a thing should be "unconstitutional" and yet things like this happen all too frequently in Israel.

The fact that there is no constitution, is certainly NOT Bibi's fault but he lives with it, as do we all.

      Delete
    3. It's very easy to blame it on Bibi- ad some might actually be his fault, but he is doing a fine job in an extremely difficult position. That said, his grievances have absolutely nothing to do with Simone's diatribe. Thanks for reading!

    1. It's pretty simple. Look at the History. Look at Hamas's charter (#7 specifically). Look at the terror attacks on NON-ISRAELI Jews carried out by Palestinian terrorists back in the 70's, 80's and before Israel was even a state. Look at every war that Israel fought. Non of them were initiated by Israel. Look at the position PLO had on Israel prior to 1974, before they decided to fool the world into pressuring Israel into eventual destruction, by the means of land concessions. If they wanted a state they could have signed a peace treaty with Israel and declared their independence. But that's not what they want. They want Israel gone. Meanwhile, the Palestinian govt pockets all the cash that international community sends to help the seemingly hopeless Palestinians. It's a win-win for them.

People who romanticise Israel say this, and get very defensive when challenged. Like Vietnam vers who came home and no one wanted to hear or believe their stories. Israelis and Jews are human and fallible like everyone else...and be allowed to be. As someone who served extensively in Gaza and Yehuda and Shomron during 1st Intifada 1987 I can tell you people in my unit were not always mor - far from it. Being fallible does not detract one iota from the big picture, so I stand by my "unnecessary hubris." Thanks for reading!

Funny thing is that history time and time again, has shown us that when Jew reminds a Jew about their 'Jewishness', it is often uncomfortable and unpleasant, but if the Goyim remind us... well it's never been just a few words or insults shared about our differences. The problem here is the complacency of these people - it has bred ignorance with no want to seek the truth. As you mentioned, about categorizing Jews, 'no one asks right or left wing' - when it comes down to killing Jews, no one cares which category of Jew you're from - well except one - are you dead or alive!

Then again, the same was said of Barack Obama in 2007.
Your response was wonderful. I hope she will snap out of it but I doubt it. Miss Zimmerman's attack on Mr Netanyahu was sadly expected from lefty loonies. It amazes me she apparently doesn't realize she is a useful idiot. For that matter so is the entire Left. I do find it ironic in a sad way.

They are no future Jews. They are the last Jews in their line and in the process of baling out they have no problem in abusing what they are leaving. It's not just great self justification, it is squeezing all the kudos juice, self gratification and personal aggrandizement they can get from it. Sadly we live in a world where people are keen to buy their crap.

so kudos to simone for offering an opinion that someone will disagree with. i think bernie sanders said it best "There comes a time when if we pursue justice and peace we are going to have to say that Netanyahu is not right all of the time."

    1. I think you said it all. You're a Jew who doesn't care about Judaism or Jews- therefore, of course you feel the way you do. Your religion is Bernie, and as sad and pathetic as that is, it's your right. You, like him, are a Jew in name only- an accident of birth. But Simone is portraying herself differently- as an engaged bernie fanatic and jewishly involved to boot. That's why I responded to her appointment while your self-hatred gets mostly a yawn and a little pity. Aside from that, it's not about Bibi, it's about vulgarity and abuse toward an allied head of state with nary a word against heads of state who swear the annihilation of world Jewry. Stop being willfully ignorant. Have a great day!

      Delete
    2. "an accident of birth" how accepting of you. i mean, it couldn't have anything to do with the judgmental jewish community community i grew up in or the jews who bullied me all through school that has affected how i view judaism. no, no...i must have been an accidental birth...it's the ONLY explanation.

i bet you're probably among the special snowflakes who were personally offended when our prime minister didn't specifically mention jews in his speech about the holocaust.

and just because simone was talking ill of netanyahu, doesn't mean she supports iran, or syria, or any of those other states. that's like saying apples are bad because i like watermelon.

      Delete
    3. Jordana, Again, you have absolutely no right or expertise to call someone "a Jew who doesn't care about Judaism or Jews". If anyone is willfully ignorant, it is you. Grow up little girl and understand that there is more to caring about Jews and Judaism than Israel and Bibi.

      Delete
    4. I am not to blame for the "judgmental Jewish community" you grew up with- that's an issue you need to work on yourself. I will say "don't judge Judaism by the Jews."

I am in no way shape or form "a special snowflake," but yeah it's super odd for any Prime minister not to specifically mention Jews in a speech about the Holocaust. I think that was Trudeau right? Yeah, I don't like him and think he's a terrible leader for Canada.

Last- I don't think Simone hating Netanyahu means she supports Iran. I think her stated support of the Iran deal means she supports it. Also, a year on- how's that deal lookin?

I said nothing about Syria or "other states" so I can't speak to what your mind has conjured there. Be well!

Hi Gina! I have EVERY right to say my opinion- just like you have the right to angrily disagree on my blog. I'm unclear what expertise I need to say an opinion- but I have been Jewish since Im born, went to Jewish schools and camps, belong to a synagogue where I pray weekly, live a Jewish lifestyle, plan to marry Jewish and raise a Jewish family, moved to the Jewish state, will send my sons to the Jewish army and be buried one day at 120 in a Jewish cemetery. SO YEAH, I guess I do have the expertise to call someone who doesn't care about Jewish safety " a Jew who doesn't care about Jews!"

That is not willful ignorance- because it is not ignorant.

The fact that you just told a grown woman to "grow up" is so lame and patronizing, I feel sad for you. Get well!

  40. Hello Jordana! It has been a very long time. A friend of mine posted your blog post and I read it. Fantastic post and thank you! It was eloquent and powerful. Hatzalcha raba in Israel! Chag Sameach!

  41. Jordana I am so grateful for your post. Zimmerman is a Jew, whether she supports it or not and God forbid just because of what she expound will not stop the antisemites and radical Islamists from raping her and cutting off her head. The same goes for Bernie Sanders. When push comes to shove, just because Sanders claims to be a Jew and supports the Palestinian cause doesn't mean that the terrorists will support him and spare him.

  42. Jordana, you write, "How dare you gamble with my country, my people and my life because you think Obama knows better than Bibi about what's best for Israel." We dare because of all of OUR tax money that goes to foreign aid to Israel; because your precious prime minister has the chutzpah to come and speak inside the legislative branch of OUR government behind OUR president's back. Unless I'm living under a rock, I don't believe that Obama spoke inside the Knesset. What right does Netanyahu have to talk negatively about OUR president to OUR legislative branch? Absurd. I am a Jew and not an antisemetic Jew as you would call me, but Netanyahu is a narcissist. Those of us who do not support your sainted prime minister do not necessarily support those countries that claim they want to wipe Israel off the map.

I just spent an evening with an American Jew, who spent most of his youth and 30 years of his adult life living in Israel, serving in the army, etc. He has nothing good to say about Netanyahu and speaks of the government corruption, the dwindling middle class and the outrageously high cost of living.

Who decided you were the expert on which American Jews were antisemites and who just do not like the politics of a narcissistic Israeli leader?

    1. Obama was invited to speak in the Knesset but chose not too. Instead he organized a place to speak where the US Embassy in Israel handpicked who would attend: http://www.timesofisrael.com/obama-forgoes-knesset-address/

      BTW, great post Jordana!

    2. Thanks Cosmic X!

Hi Unknown! That's actually MY tax money to0- and my parents! And plenty of American citizens who DO support Israel! So please take your "tax money" gripes elsewhere. And learn about "foreign aid" and see how much of what America gives to Israel is spent on buying this FROM America.

PS-Im sure now that Obama isn't president, you feel EXACTLY the same way about the sanctity of the American presidency and are the first to angrily defend Trump when he's maligned by other heads of state. *eyeroll*

Your American Jew friend is right- there is corruption, money is difficult to come by and it's hard to live here. Many people don't like Netanyahu. All these gripes actually mean something coming from HIM- you, not so much!

I never called myself an expert- your strawmen are just everywhere! (I also never called Zimmerman an anti-Semite- feel free to re-read!) I am a person with a blog and I am FREE to give my opinion on the internet- it's like a thing people do these days. Again, I truly and honestly couldn't care less about how you feel about Bibi, just like you didn't care when I couldn't stand the narcissistic American leader, Obama. Shabbat shalom!

  43. Great article. Loved it :) I think you need a historical vision to realize you are falling off a cliff with no return - and that is the American progressive left. Stop progressing - you have no children - your Judaism is lost, your culture so cynically trampled that there are no more holy cows to shoot, your civilization is dying - and you are eviscerating what is left in pursuit of a nihilistic dream.
